Populus partners with the City of Oakland and carsharing operators to expand mobility data-sharing to improve shared mobility parking in cities.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. May 27, 2021—Populus, a smart data platform that empowers cities to manage shared mobility services, streets, and curbs, today announced they have launched a new digital carsharing parking solution in Oakland.

As the industry’s leading mobility data platform solution for cities, Populus first introduced digital carsharing parking to cities in 2018. As the platform of choice for the City of Oakland to manage shared e-scooters and mopeds, Populus expanded their platform to add the carsharing operator, GIG Car Share, to support data-sharing and curbside parking payment.

This carsharing expansion allows the city to validate parking activity of the shared mobility fleet through a trusted third party. It is a win-win for the carsharing operator as well—in exchange for proactive, digital payment of parking fees, carsharing vehicles are exempt from receiving parking tickets.

Now serving more than 80 cities around the world, the Populus platform is consistently selected as the system of choice by cities from Oakland to San Diego and Tel Aviv. Populus has facilitated data-sharing agreements with 25+ shared mobility operators, ingesting data from 65 million rides to date.

“This expansion of the Populus platform in the City of Oakland demonstrates what is possible when shared mobility operators and cities effectively work together,” said Regina Clewlow, CEO and Co-Founder of Populus. “Our platform not only makes it easier for the shared mobility providers to pay for frictionless parking, but also provides the city with access to better data to plan for the future of mobility.”
